This book genuinely made a difference in our house. Our son specifically requested this to be read every night for about two weeks straight, and during that time something clearly clicked. The story is simple, relatable, and reassuring without being overdramatic. Nolan's nervousness feels realistic for a toddler, and the tone stays positive and encouraging throughout. What I appreciated most is that it normalizes hesitation without shaming it. The language is age-appropriate, the repetition helps reinforce the message, and the payoff feels earned rather than forced. After those two weeks of nightly reading, our son started using the toilet. We didn't change anything else significantly in our routine — this book was the consistent variable. That alone earns it five stars from us. If you're in the middle of potty training and looking for something gentle, encouraging, and toddler-friendly, this was a real help in our home.
Very cute story to help your child overcome using the potty. My granddaughter's favorite potty story.
My 3 year old was having a hard time with potty training. No matter what we tried with our strong-willed girl, she was not having any of it. When it came to books to explain the process or demonstrate how it works, it felt like we tried every single one out there, and she eventually resisted reading anything with the word "potty". In a desperate attempt to find the one thing that would break through to her, I combed Reddit threads (as one does in the late hours of the evening), and came across someone mentioning Nervous Nolan. When this book arrived in the mail, she, of course, wanted nothing to do with it. I started to read it out loud to my 7 month old to pique my 3 year olds interest. I could tell she was listening, but stood her distance. That evening, I put it with her bedtime books and my husband started to read it to her…without objection! The following days were filled with requests to read it many times in a day, and she really seemed to relate to Nolan. We would talk about how the characters were feeling, and she seemed to ride the wave of the story just as it was written. Potty training still isn't perfect, but she made huge strides after reading this book. I am so happy to have discovered this gem of a book, and even more appreciative of the author to write such a genuinely sweet story. My daughter is starting preschool soon, and I just discovered there is a Nervous Nolan Bison Goes to School, so best believe that is on the way! :)
Our 4 year old was so nervous about going to potty, he would withhold it for days. We bought the book and it was just right for his age and connection and he was talking about being nervous since he hides behind the chair to go poop. Within 20 minutes of reading this book, our son went to potty for first time ever. I honestly can't believe it. We purchased this book with our own funds and no way endorsed by company or anyone. This book also described everything he was doing and everything we were feeling as parents and a message was in there for us as parent to be patient as it is not a race. Our son had bad experience in prior daycare of trying to make him go at age 3 and once we learned we removed him. So he did not have a good association with the bathroom. It has been a journey, but new daycare worked with him and we did at home and he was #1 trained within 2 weeks. We tried to grant him grace and time for better association with the bathroom. For any parents that need a great book, this is it. We may not be out of the woods with him #2 yet, but we made so much progress. To any parents feeling like it won't ever happen like we did, it will and we are forever grateful for this book.
My 3 year old loved this potty training book! We read several and this one was by far his favorite!
I was really struggling with a 3 year old that would withhold her stool for long periods. This book was great and a fun read to help her understand
This book matched everything we had in mind to potty training. Little ones are intimidated but with an open conversation about what happens, this book helps! Our little one loves the art work and asks questions about the characters. Absolutely fantastic!
My daughter-in-law is training my grandson and I heard about this book so I decided to purchase it to see if it would help her with the training and he sits and listens to the story without moving around to much so I say it's definitely working the way we need it to. If your child has trouble sitting still while potty training you may want to give this book a try.
My 2 year old son loved this book. We were taking a slow, child driven approach to training and while I was a bit worried the mentions of being afraid and unsure would hinder him, he seemed to need this commentary emotionally to get the nerve to start using the potty for #2 and never looking back!
